Lycos to shut down Webmonkey?
According to Valleywag, Lycos is set to shut down the web coding help site Webmonkey in a few months, quoting an anonymous source from within the company.
If this is true, then it will be another major blow to those who use sites like Webmonkey to get a foothold on the world of web coding and design. The site has a rich archive of well-written and engaging articles which are set to be deleted out of all existance. Granted, some of them are now quite out-of-date, but with Webmonkey’s budget allegedly so low, I’m not at all surprised. There are even broken links on the homepage, which doesn’t bode well at all.
Something similar to this happened when Netscape shut down and deleted their DevEdge site which contained many hundreds of articles on web coding as well as a much-used HTML reference. Fortunately, Mozilla was able to rescue the content before it was deleted forever and set up a new site with it, but nobody knows what will happen this time around. Will somebody come to Webmoney’s rescue?
I can only say one thing - if I had the resources, I would certainly negotiate with Lycos to acquire the content and domain name and keep it running, updating it in the process with a refreshed design, valid coding and many more new articles. Sadly, being a poor student, I can’t do anything like that at all. Maybe someone else will step up to the challenge? Let’s hope so.
